Borderless display and connections
Aesthetically very similar to the VP279HE, the monitor has a 22-inch borderless panel. If you are unfamiliar with the imperial measurement system, this equates to approximately 56 centimeters diagonal.
The measurement is perfect for those who use the display at a distance of less than one meter, so as not to lose in sharpness and definition.
The edges, while present, are actually very thin, which is common to many PC monitors but facilitates multi-monitor setups.
Equally thin is the profile, which is only 7 mm thick except in the part where they find space:
- the input for the power cable and therefore the internal power supply;
- a VGA port;
- an HDMI port.
In this regard, even if the HDMI cable can carry both video and audio signals, ASUS VZ229HE does not integrate any type of speaker.
Sure, in some monitors they are powerful enough to be useful. This is the case of the Philips 288E2A, with its 3 Watt speakers each.
But for monitors like this, where cutting production costs helps lower the selling price, their absence is understandable.
Another lack, perhaps more important, is that of the VESA 100 x 100 attachment. You will be able to mount the screen only on the original base, however solid and well made.
In general, however, the ASUS VZ229HE has a very elegant and impactful design. The build quality is high, a nice surprise considering the cost and the compromises reached.
The contents of the box
As you may have already guessed, the equipment of the ASUS model is not very provided. Here too, the Taiwanese brand has preferred to contain the costs of the monitor.
So here's what you will find inside the package:

- circular base;
- VGA cable;
- manual.
I will still not understand why the companies that make monitors still include the VGA cable and don't bother to include an HDMI cable as well.
The latter is much more used today and offers better video quality, so its absence is not justified.
IPS panel quality
Acronym for In-Plane Switching, IPS indicates one of the technologies with which the LED backlight passes through the liquid crystals of a monitor to obtain the pixels at the base of the images you see.
A difference of TN panels, IPS ones ensure:
- a better color rendering, with greater fidelity to the truth, although not at the levels of OLED screens;
- 178 ° viewing angles both vertically and horizontally.
Sure, you won't get short response times or high refresh rates, but the ASUS VZ229HE isn't a monitor designed for gaming.
These features would have been an extra that would have increased the price without ensuring any perceptible benefit.
Consistent with the technical specifications, the image quality is really excellent: the various colors are rendered very well. The only exception is white, which veers slightly on "cream", but nothing too noticeable.
Likewise, ASUS has worked to reduce one of the inherent flaws of IPS technology: the presence of backlight bleeding.
As the name suggests, this is the phenomenon where you may notice halos more or less present at the edges or at the ends of the panel.
Fortunately, nell'Asus VZ229HE the backlight bleeding is extremely limited.
Even if it is present, with very dark images on the screen, you will only notice it with the ambient lighting reduced to a minimum.
Thanks also to the Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, the ASUS monitor will be able to accompany you well for all your daily operations, leisure and work.
And yes: if you don't think you are looking for a competitive advantage when playing online, you can also use it for gaming. And with fair results.
Main features
In any self-respecting monitor, fatigue reduction technologies must be present. Its usefulness is easy to understand, especially if you use the screen for long sessions.
In the VZ229HE, these technologies are brought together in a suite called ASUS Eye Care, consisting of:
- Low Blue Light, which reduces the emission of blue light and therefore helps to prevent your eyes from getting tired;
- Flicker-Free, which thanks to the dynamic adjustment of the backlight significantly reduces the occurrence of flickering.
In addition to this, you can activate Vivid Pixel from the monitor's OSD menu, a technology that increases the definition of the images displayed by the ASUS VZ229HE.
Unfortunately, one of the major flaws of the model comes right from the menu.
As long as you use it with the VGA cable, you will have all the settings available, compatibly with analog quality.
If instead, you want to use the HDMI cable, part of the menu is disabled, and in some cases, you will have to settle for the default settings.
Nothing problematic, here, but from ASUS I would have expected a greater refinement on the software side.
Conclusions
ASUS VZ229HE is a good IPS monitor that - while not costing much - offers image quality beyond its category.
In fact, the compromises found by ASUS focus on other features: software, connectivity, functionality. All important but not essential aspects.
For this reason, the monitor is essential but perfectly capable of managing all your activities.
